Ten Reasons to Row at Brenau
Each woman at Brenau will have her own unique combination of reasons for rowing;
some of the following might be included.

Try something new. College is a great opportunity to test oneself in new areas, for many women this can include sports. Because rowing is so different, and not universally available, it presents a great opportunity.

In the Top 10. The Olympic venue and boat house on Lake Lanier make Gainesville a very special place. This location is ranked as one of the top 10 places to row in North America.

On the water. Rowing is a great way to get away from the stress of school, land life, campus, and the normal world.  Being on the lake gets you closer to nature, exercising, and lifts the spirit. Exercise for fitness.  Rowing is a "total body" sport, using most major muscle groups. Also, the fact that it is practiced from the sitting position makes it easy on hips, knees, and ankles.
Part of a Team. Rowing is the ultimate team sport. Two, four, or eight women work as one to achieve their goals. The need to work together as a team makes it necessary to put the group ahead of individual ego and interests. This is sometimes a hard lesson to learn, but a very valuable one. No previous experience needed.  Rowing at Benau is designed to teach beginners, and help them develop to the highest level. One former rower has continued to the national team in her native Sweden.
Lifetime Sport.  Since rowing is a whole body exercise and is so easy on the joints, it can be practices well into the '70's. All that is needed is a body of water, equipment, and the will to continue. Weight loss. Rowing is a great calorie burner. Research has shown that rowing burns calories faster than biking at the same perceived level of exertion.
Solo or Social. Brenau rowers also learn to scull, so that they can row by themselves in a one-person shell. Rowing with others is a great way to build life-long relationships. Flexibility and Strength.  Because rowing exercises muscles through a wide range of motion it promotes flexibility and mobility. And while the legs provide a lot of the moving power, the back muscles (undeveloped in many Americans) are needed to link the power of the legs to the oar handle. Rowing is one of the few aerobic activities that can condition and strengthen the back.
