During the academic year (August to May) practices are held 3 to 5 times per week depending on the students schedule.
The focus in the fall is on learning parts of the rowing stroke in detail and becoming comfortable in the boat. After a brief introduction to the stroke on ergometers at the gym, the program moves to the boathouse for water training.
Depending on progress of the team, there is the possibility for racing in the fall. The Head of Lanier and Head of the Hooch are two very popular nearby events.
Usually a week or two before Thanksgiving break there is a transition to winter training at the gym. During this period there is a focus on development of strength and endurance with weight training and ergometers. The Atlanta Erg Sprints at Georgia Tech in early February provide a conclusion to this phase. It gives Brenau rowers a chance to mark their progress with other teams from the southeast.
By late February teams from the northeast start arriving in Gainesville for spring training, this gives Brenau Crew a chance to practice with many different programs. Late March and April are the prime racing season for teams in the southeast. Lanier Sprints, John Hunter Regatta, and SIRA Championships are the concluding events of the season.
During the summer, students who stay in Gainesville are invited to continue rowing with Lake Lanier Rowing Club for the Southeast Regional Championships and the Georgia Games. |
