 At first glance, you´d think "sisters." Golden Tigers latest soccer recruit Mandy Ulseth and the other half of the daughter-mother pair are striking look-alikes. But this isn´t the only surprise that comes with Brenau´s new student. Considering her quiet, polite manners, it is instructive to learn that she´s won the local Freight Train Award for Agressiveness. Recruited from the team at Young Harris Junior College, Ulseth is likely to add more fire power to an already explosive soccer team. "It is no fluke that she was awarded MVP Defense as well as the "Freight Train" award because she is such a tenacious defender that she will cause all kinds of problems for opposing forwards- I really look forward to seeing her play for us," says Mike Lochstampfor, soccer coach for the Brenau Golden Tigers. "The soccer players I met at my campus visit were really nice," Ulseth says. "They pretty much made me feel like I'm a team member already."



The Freight Train thing happened during her junior year. If anything, Ulseth´s play has become even more aggressive since then. "In my senior year, I was awarded MVP for Defense. I was also elected to the All-Gwinnett County Team for 5-A.". In 2006, she was Captain of the Young Harris women's National Team. That year, she also was named to the All-Region (17) and All-Tournament Team.


With so much energy going into playing soccer, here´s the third surprise: Mandy Ulseth is an outstanding scholar. At Young Harris Junior College, she graduated Magna Cum Laude with 4 semesters of being on the Dean´s List. She was also a member of Who´s Who and Who´s Who Athletic Edition. Coach Lochstampfor is enthusiastic about her academic plans. "One of her criteria for selecting a school was that they have a strong Biology program that would challenge her as she plans on going to medical school following college." It´s a well-known fact that a science degree from Brenau, followed by medical school, is a career track loaded with challenges. But all the indicators are that Ulseth will be going down that track like - well - a freight train.
